What’s Your Favorite Cover?

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right?

Many songs have been covered by another artist later in time.  Sometimes, the cover turns out to be better than the original.  I wanted to share some originals and their covers with you and please feel free to comment some of your favorite covers as well.  Hope you enjoy 🙂

1- Etta James ‘At Last’.  Cover done by BeyoncĂ©

2- Fleetwood Mac ‘Landslide’.  Cover by The Dixie Chicks

3-Queen ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.  Cover done by Panic at the Disco.  *I first learned about Bohemian Rhapsody when I watched “Wayne’s World” in the 90’s. My son introduced me to the cover recently as  Panic at the Disco is one of his favorite groups.  This is a pretty difficult song to cover and while nothing can beat Queen’s version, I think the Panic boys did a pretty good job.

4-Dolly Parton ‘I Will Always Love You’.  Cover by Whitney Houston.  This is probably one example where I like the cover way more than the original.  This song was meant for Whitney.

5-  Chaka Khan ‘I’m Every Woman’.  Cover done by Whitney Houston.  *I don’t think it’s possible for Whitney to NOT kill any song she sings.

6-DeBarge ‘Love Me In a Special Way’. Cover done by Tamia.  *Tamia makes any song that she sings sound amazingly beautiful.

7- Frankie Valli ‘Can’t Take My Eyes off of You’.  Cover done by Lauryn Hill.

8-Betty Hutton ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’. Cover done by Bjork.

Queen Bey

So I’ve been a long time fan of BeyoncĂ©. Ever since she was in Destiny’s Child. I was listening to a BeyoncĂ© playlist on Spotify while driving home the other night and there are seriously so many songs that she has done over the course of her career that there is no way I could pick a favorite. Or even a top five for that matter. I was thinking about her videos and started pondering which ones would be on my all time top ten list.

I would like to share my ten most favorite music videos of Beyonce’s. Not necessarily because of the song alone, but that combined with the visual appeal. Please feel free to share and comment which is your favorite BeyoncĂ© song or video.

1. Get Me Bodied-This is one of my all time favorite feel good songs. Not just from Beyoncé but in general. This song always makes me feel good and I find it hard to sit still when I hear it. I absolutely loved the video when it first came out and loved that she had the former D.C. members and her sister, Solange, featured in it. Who can resist dancing when you hear Bey naming those classic dances?

2. Ring the Alarm- This is a personal favorite for me because what woman can say that they haven’t been in a relationship or came out of a relationship where they felt cheated? Like you gave your all just for him to move on to someone new. We all have a little bit of crazy in us (some more than others) and this definitely expresses what a lot of women have felt.

3. Listen-This song is off of the Dreamgirls soundtrack. This song has a lot of personal meaning to me because it encompasses what I felt during the last few years of my past relationship. I felt very trapped and it’s like I was dying inside. He was very verbally and psychologically abusive and loved to tell me that I would be nothing without him. He never seemed to understand or care how unhappy I was and thought that as long as he paid rent, I should be happy. I remember belting this song out when I was home alone because it is exactly what I was feeling. I used to tell my mom and friends that my home doesn’t feel like home and then I heard BeyoncĂ© say “I am alone at a crossroads. I’m not at home in my own home. And I tried and tried to say what’s on my mind. You should have known.”

4. Crazy In Love-This was the first video BeyoncĂ© made during her solo career after Destinys Child. She is not done up but still looks beautiful. She gave us the “uh oh” dance and her legs are giving me life in those shorts. This was the first song her and Jay didntogether after “03 Bonnie and Clyde” and they had a definite chemistry.

5. If I Were a Boy-how many times do we say that men would never be able to handle it if we did to them what they do to us all the time? Every lyric in this song is relatable to women and shows the many double standards that exist in relationships. I love the twist at the end where she is the one doing dirty and he uses the “how do you think that makes me feel?” Line on her.

6. Upgrade You-Every strong man has a strong woman in his corner. “I can do for you what Martin did for the people. Ran by the men but the women keep the tempo. It’s very seldom that you’re blessed to find your equal. Still play my part but let you take the lead role”

7. Hold Up-I think I like this song so much because it is an updated version of Ring the Alarm and anything that’s a little crazy appeals to me. I love her yellow dress and her willingness to admit that even Bey gets insecure and jealous. “What’s worse? Looking jealous or crazy. More like being walked all over lately, I’d rather be crazy”.

8. Single Ladies- this is another feel good song and I would be lying if I didn’t say that I didn’t memorize the choreographed dance routine in this video. It was mocked on multiple forums and the best was Justin Timberlakes rendition of the famous video on Saturday Night Live. This song is played at every party and wedding reception and woman love doing the wrist twist.

9. Run The World- This video is very visually appealing to me and BeyoncĂ© said she received inspiration for this video by the different dances and cultures she saw when she took time off to travel. “Boy you know you love it how we smart enough to make these millions. Strong enough to bear the children. Then get back to business”.

10. Irreplaceable-this song gave us the famous “to the left” line. “To the left to the left. Everything you own in a box to the left”. A message to all that you are NOT irreplaceable. I think most woman can say they have sung this song after a breakup or when in the end stages of a failed relationship.

R and B

I honestly love all genres of music, but R and B is my favorite without a doubt. Maybe it’s because I’m a hopeless romantic that these tunes seem to touch me the most. Whether I’m in love, have a crush or am heartbroken, there is an R and B song that knows exactly how I feel. I remember falling asleep while listening to the Quiet Storm every night in high school. Today’s R and B will never compare to the talent that we had back when I was growing up. Only in the 90’s would a group of guys dressed in baggy jeans and Timbs belt out a love song while dancing in the rain.

I wanted to share some of my favorite old school R and B videos with you. I hope you enjoy and please feel free to share your favorites with me as well.

ï»żUnderneath It All

There’s times where I want something more

Someone more like me

There’s times when this dress rehearsal

Seems incomplete

But, you see the colors in me like no one else

And behind your dark glasses you’re…

You’re something else

You’re really lovely

Underneath it all

You want to love me

Underneath it all

I’m really lucky

Underneath it all

You’re really lovely

You know some real bad tricks
And you need some discipline

But, lately you’ve been trying real hard

And giving me your best

And, you give me the most gorgeous sleep

That I’ve ever had

And when it’s really bad

I guess it’s not that bad

So many moons that we have seen
Stumbling back next to me

I’ve seen right through and underneath

And you make me better

I’ve seen right through and underneath

And you make me better

Better… better…

You are my real Prince Charmin’

Like the heat from the fire

You were always burnin’

And each time you’re around

My body keeps stalin’

For your touch

Your kisses and your sweet romancin’

There’s an underside to you

That so many adore

Aside from your temper

Everything else secure

You’re good for me, baby

Oh that, I’m sure

Over and over again

I want more

You’ve used up all your coupons

And all you’ve got left is me

And somehow I’m full of forgiveness

I guess it’s meant to be

You’re really lovely
Underneath it all

You want to love me

Underneath it all

I’m really lovely

Underneath it all

And you’re really lovely

Gwen Stefani/Eve concert

Thursday night I had a blast watching Gwen Stefani and Eve perform at the Nikon Theater at Jones Beach. Eve headlined and joined Gwen onstage later for their two hit songs, “Blow Ya Mind” and “Rich Girl”.

So Gwen put on an amazing show.  She performed her songs that she’s recorded as a solo artist but also a couple of songs from her No Doubt days. Gwen looks amazing and doesn’t appear to have aged at all! She was also extremely friendly towards her fans, she went out into the crowd a couple of times and brought a girl on stage who was holding a sign asking Gwen to take a selfie with her. Gwen took a selfie with the girl when she brought her up. At one point she dedicated a song to a girl in the audience and also made sure to say it was also dedicated to Blake 😍.

Wind It Up was one of my favorite parts of the show!

Lemonade: A Visual Album by Beyoncé

What’s worse…..looking jealous or looking crazy?

I ain’t thinkin bout you……middle fingers up. Wave it in his face, tell him boy bye.

From Monday to Friday she has tears in her eyes. From Friday to Sunday she has stars in her eyes

My daddy warned me about men like you. He said baby girl he’s playin you.

Why do you deny yourself heaven? Why do you think you are undeserving?

Forgiveness: If we’re gonna heal, let it be glorious.

“And I know I promised I wouldn’t stay, every promise don’t work out that way.”

Imma keep running cause a winner don’t quit on themselves.

Nothing REAL can be threatened.
